The Toyota Previa is classified as a Multi purpose vehicle, but it’s really a mini van, as we call them in the US. It is somewhat unique in that it had a mid-ship mounted engine in the first generation mdels. What that means is that the engine is mounted behind the front wheels. It uses a longitudinal engine setup.

I like the mid-ship mounting system. Toyota introduced the first Previa in 1990 and it’s still in production. Now in it’s third generation. The word Previa is an Italian word for preview, and the Previa was Toyota’s preview of new vans to come.
Generation one Previa was also noted by these codes: XR10 and XR20. Offered from 1990 to 1997 in America. Only 2 engines were offered, both were 2.4 liter inline 4 cylinder engines.
1. 2TZ-FE: A 2.4 liter 4cylinder gasoline engine. All TZ engines are inline 4 cylinder gasoline engines with a DOHC [double overhead camshaft] head.
2. A supercharged 2.4 liter 2TZ-FZE.
The supercharger was added to increase horsepower without having to add an engine to the lineup. Part of the decision was made because it’s more difficult to mount a mid-ship engine. therefore adding more power to the existing engine solved the problem.
Second Generation Previa was changed to a front wheel drive, front engine setup. This was an obvious change since every mini van made was now front wheel drive. Which was now a totally different vehicle. It did not have an overwhelming choice of engines, but a diesel was now offered in the US.
1. 2.0 liter inline 4 cylinder diesel engine. 1CD-FTV.
2. 2.4 liter inline 4. 2AZ-FE

The third generation Previa is currently in production, and introduced in 2006 has 2 engine variants.

2. 3.5 liter V6 2GR-FE
