Lets become familiar with the VQ engine family. All VQ engines are 6 cylinder inline engines. They range in size from 2 liters to 4 liters and use an aluminum block and aluminum DOHC heads [double overhead camshafts]. The VQ35DE is considered a modern engine. It uses Nissan’s variable valve timing technology. It was on Wards top 10 engine list from 2002 to 2007.
A modified version was made for the ‘Fairlady X Z-Tune GT’, producing 300 horsepower at 7,200 revolutions per minute. And there were some engines outfitted with a supercharger putting out 377 HP.
In 2007 Nissan upgraded VQ35 by adding the VQ35HR model engine, HR stands for High Revving, or High Response. It makes use of NDIS [Nissan Direct Ignition System] and CVTC with hydraulic actuation on the intake cam and electromagnetic action on the exhaust cam. Redline is 7,500 rpm. According to Nissan over 80% of the internal components were redesigned or strengthened to handle the tremendous increase in wear and breakage created by revving so high.
