The Sorento was introduced in 2002 by Kia and is a mid-sized SUV-crossover vehicle using front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and all wheel drive. All together, 10 different Kia Sorento engines for sale were available through the two generations of Sorento, through the present year models. All engines are transverse mounted.
A bit off topic, but the Sorento was awarded the maximum safety ratings from the crash safety experts, European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) and Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). The XM Sorento awarded ‘Top Safety Pick’ from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US.
It’s easy to think that Kia put a lot of engine options in their cars, they did, but you have to remember the Sorento was sold all over the world. So some engines were produced to meet the emission requirements of a particular area. Therefore not all of the engines listed below came to America.
Generation 1; [2002-2009];
2.4 L I4
3.3 L Lambda V6
3.5 L Sigma V6
3.8 L Lambda V6
2.5 L Diesel I4
Generation 2; [2009 to present];
2.4L Theta II I4 petrol
2.7L Mu V6 LPG
3.5L Lambda II V6 petrol
2.2L CRDI R-Line I4 diesel
As you can see, Kia offers a diesel motor in their lineup. They also used a LPG [liquid propane gas] setup too. When you sell cars all over the world, lots of engine options have to be made available for different geographic areas.
